In his famous commentary on the Qur’an, sheikh ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Sa’di explained this passage by writing:

The people of Jannah are are the successful ones. * The people of the Hellfire and the people of Jannah are not equal. * And do not be like those who forgot Allah so He made them forget themselves. O you who believe, have taqwa of Allah and let every soul look at what it has sent forth for tomorrow. Here, Allah is saying: The situation of these Jews of Banu al-Nadhir and the munafiqoon and the punishment that Allah made and unleashed on them “is like that of those before them.” Imam ibn Jarir al-Tabari opened his tafsir of the first of these ayaat by saying:

* They are like the shaytaan when he tells man, “disbelieve,” but then when he disbelieves, he says, “I am certainly free of you! I fear Allah, Lord of all creation.”

They tasted the bad outcome of their affair and they will have a painful punishment. Their situation is like that of those shortly before them.
